Alex Ferreira, an Aspen native, has been climbing the freeskiing halfpipe ranks for some time now, and during 2014 he landed right where he wanted to be: on the X Games podium.

Known for his contagious smile and strong work ethic, Ferreira went into the season an Olympic hopeful from the U.S. Freeskiing Rookie Team. Despite having top-five finishes at two of the Grand Prix events, including a second in Park City, Ferreira didn’t secure a spot on the inaugural Olympic halfpipe team. But his season wasn’t over there. On a roll from the Park City Grand Prix, Ferreira headed to his hometown and won his first X Games medal, a bronze in halfpipe. He then went on to win the Aspen/Snowmass Open, finish sixth in halfpipe on the AFP world ranking list and move up to the U.S. Freeskiing Pro Halfpipe Team.

In 2013 Ferreira made it to both X Games Aspen and Tignes. He had a great halfpipe run going during X Games but couldn’t quite put it to his feet. Nevertheless, he jumped up from 25th to 12th in AFP rankings and finished sixth at the Copper Grand Prix. He shows steady progression each season and will be one to keep an eye on for years to come.

ALEX SAYS
This season was the best season ever because, although I didn't make the Olympic Team, I accomplished another goal. I landed on the podium at X Games. Next season I'm looking forward to getting more involved with the slopestyle scene and hope to make some friends.

FIRST TRACKS
This born and bred Aspenite took to Aspen Highlands when he was three with his mom and dad. At five years old he became a member of Aspen Valley Ski & Snowboard Club. It’s been nearly 12 years and Ferreira hasn’t looked back.

OFF THE SNOW
Ferreira is an outdoorsy guy and in the summer he enjoys cliff jumping, tubing, jumping on the trampoline, playing soccer and hanging out at the beach. He also attends Westminster College, which keeps him busy between competitions.
