BIOGRAPHY
After moving to the skiing hotbed of Steamboat Springs, Colorado at age 10, Ryan Dyer, a Denver transplant, abandoned dreams of making it big on the baseball diamond and gave in to the Winter Olympic spirit than surrounded him at his new home. After being introduced to skiing competition in racing, he found something that really called to him.

“Racing was fun and I met a lot of good friends, but racing could never hold my attention,” says Dyer. “I decided to try moguls. I instantly loved it. In my first event I placed fifth. The speed and the jumps were a perfect combo for me.”

Dyer’s break came early in the 2011 season when he took the overall top spot at the U.S. Team Selection event and was invited to join the U.S. Ski Team. A bronze medal at his second U.S National Championships gave him plenty of momentum.

Dyer started his 2012 season on an exciting note with his first European World Cup contest but a broken collarbone followed by a bruised hip kept him on the sidelines for most of the season. A sixth-place finish at U.S. National Championships kept the fires burning for a strong 2013 push.

RYAN SAYS
My season was pretty up and down this year. I started the year on the C team gunning for a coaches’ discretion spot for the first seven World Cups of the year. I earned that spot and was granted to ski World Cups for the season! I competed in my first foreign World Cup in Ruka, Finland. I was unable to put a solid run down and missed finals.

Three days later, I broke my collarbone in a training run. I had to fly back to the States and have surgery. They put in a plate and nine screws. After healing much sooner than expected, I was able to compete in the Deer Valley World Cup six weeks later. I placed 19th in single moguls. I was very happy to get a top-20 result fresh off injury.

My highlight of the year was definitely competing in my first European World Cup. I learned that hard work pays off and you have to learn to forget your injuries to keep moving forward. I had so much fun hanging out with my team in Ruka for four weeks before I got hurt.

I am really looking forward to get back on snow and start skiing consistently next year. I was able to achieve World Cup Starts last year but I could not compete them consistently due to injury. I am looking to improve upon that.

For the pre-Olympic year I obviously would like to improve my team status from C to A or B. The only way to do that is to ski World Cups. My goal is to ski in as many World Cups as I can and give myself a chance to move up in the system.

FIRST TRACKS
Born in Denver, Dyer, his two sibling and parents spent their weekends on the slopes since he was four. When the weekly haul to Steamboat got too heavy, the family relocated to be closer to the snow just as Ryan turned 10. “I have always loved skiing but I never had any aspirations to ski living in Denver. I always wanted to be a baseball or soccer player,” says Dyer. “However, once in Steamboat I realized all skiing had to offer. I could ski race, ski jump, halfpipe, park, moguls, even snowboard. This was much more fun for me than running on a field.”

OFF THE SNOW
Away from the snow Dyer enjoys time with friends and family, golf, mountain biking, soccer, baseball...”I never met a sport I didn't like,” he says. “I like sports!”
