Aspen local Wiley Maple has the body for hockey and was originally headed in that direction when skiing provided him a slap-shot opportunity to ski with the U.S. Development Team. He's made it count and is now a rising star among the men's speed team.
After tearing his ACL late in the 2012 season, Maple missed a decent chunk of the 2013 prep period and was slower than he would have liked getting back to his natural speed last winter. Despite the setback, things started clicking again toward the end of January, when Maple clocked a rare U.S. win during a Europa Cup downhill.
He then kicked it up a notch in the spring with a post-season trip to the Alaskan outback to compete in the gnarly Arctic Man Ski and Snowmobile race (won by teammate Marco Sullivan).
