PyeongChang 2018 Offers New Opportunity

July, 2011

What an unbelievable opportunity we have in front of us with the IOC's selection of PyeongChang, South Korea, as the site of the 2018 Olympic Winter Games! It's a chance to take our sports to a new and truly fascinating destination. And it's an opportunity to have our sports of skiing and snowboarding as the primary showcase events on the outskirts of the host city of PyeongChang.

Having had a chance to review PyeongChang's bid documents and learn more about the region, I've been very pleasantly surprised. This was really an amazing bid which had the unqualified support of the entire nation of South Korea! And it's a destination that's well prepared to produce an amazing Olympics.

With snow-capped mountains, majestic valleys and an immaculate coastline to the east, PyeongChang provides the distinct charm and cozy character of a small village community complete with big city amenities.

The 1988 Games in Seoul gave Korea the opportunity to see the powerful impact an Olympics can have on a nation. Now, given the chance to host its first-ever Winter Games, Korea will offer a fresh perspective and bold new vision.

PyeongChang will have a unique Olympic atmosphere with a compact layout of skiing and snowboarding venues in the host city. Most of the skiing and snowboarding venues are already in existence.

Like Sochi in 2014, PyeongChang is carrying on the direction of bringing venues closer together and in near proximity of the host city. All skiing and snowboarding venues are within 30 minutes of the Olympic stadium ensuring an unprecedented athlete and spectator experience which will result in a world class Olympic hospitality experience.

PyeongChang is a great winter sports destination and the hosts will bring an incredibly unique vision to these one of a kind Games. You will be amazed at the world class hospitality delivered by Foundation for "Team PyeongChang".

Thanks for your continued support, and I look forward to seeing you in Korea in 2018!
