A snowboarding prodigy in his own right, Greg Bretz was on a board at age five and began competing at 10. The young shredder shook up the scene in 2008 with podium finishes and wins on both the World Cup and Grand Prix circuits, earning him his spot with the U.S. Snowboarding squad.

The 2010 season saw the halfpipe rider notch a pair of top-10 finishes on the U.S. Grand Prix tour, which sealed him a spot on his first Olympic Team. The then 20-year-old landed a 12th in Vancouver.

Although Bretz battled nagging injuries in 2012, he still managed to podium at both the Copper and Mammoth U.S. Grand Prix events. Then in 2013 Bretz continued to knock on the podium door despite tough competition at the Grand Prix and X Games.

Bretz came out of the gate swinging in 2014, winning the first Olympic qualifier of the season at the Breckenridge Dew Tour stop, becoming the first halfpipe rider to best Shaun White in nearly four years. Bretz backed up that win with a second place finish at the U.S. Grand Prix at Copper Mountain, making an early claim on his ticket to Sochi. Bretz went on to win his first X Games medal in Aspen and then continued his strong riding at Rosa Khutor, where he posted another 12th-place finish at the 2014 Sochi Olympic Winter Games.

Bretz remembers being frustrated a lot when he took his first turns at June Mountain, CA at the age of five. But the first snowboard he got from his father, who worked lift maintenance at Mammoth Mountain, seemed to fit him better than a pair of skis ever could, so he stuck with it.

In the summer Bretz can be found skateboarding, playing around with his friends and hanging out with his parents.
