Andrew Weibrecht is sibling number four of five and took up skiing after he begged his parents to let him join older brother Jonathan at Whiteface, NY, the site of the 1980 Olympic Games. Now one of the most exhilarating ski racers to watch kick out of the start gate, Weibrecht has grown from the kid swinging on his parents chandeliers to the 2010 Olympic super G bronze medalist.

Never one to back off the gas pedal, Weibrecht went full blast into the 2013 season, pushing the envelope in every race he started. Unfortunately, the margin for error in ski racing is very, very thin and resulted in an uncomfortable number of DNFs for the man they call 'Warhorse.' During big races like Kitzbuehel and the World Championships, he was right in the podium mix before going out. Also not helping his case was a season riddled with sickness, especially in November and December.

Instead of heading home immediately in the spring, the resilient and determined Weibrecht headed to Soelden, Austria to test some new boards and then to Vail, CO to take a quick scope of his bum ankle. With Sochi on the horizon, it's all about adding another Olympic medal to his life story.

It wasn't the World Cup season I was looking for by any means, but I still was able to finish 29th in the super G standings and know that I have the speed.

I also made a really tough decision this spring. After 25 years with Rossignol, I made the switch to Head and am already really happy with the feel. It will take a lot of time on snow before I have the new skis dialed, but I'm looking forward to the challenge and going fast in Sochi.

FIRST TRACKS
Growing up in Lake Placid, he was with NYSEF from the start…at five years old. His older brother was a racer “and I felt left out,” according to Weibrecht. His race training began five years later and he would go on to make the U.S. Development Team with the 2003 season and be named to the C Team for ’05. He also raced at the 2004, ’05 and ’06 Junior World Championships, where he concluded his Junior Worlds portfolio with a super G bronze.

OFF THE SNOW
Nicknamed the 'Warhorse' for the way he attacks the mountain, Weibrecht's Olympic medal was honored with Lake Placid's Cottage Café (owned by his folks Ed and Lisa) serving pints of Warhorse. The pints came out again a few days later when Weibrecht returned home to parade down Main Street Lake Placid on a fire truck with his fiancé (now wife) Denja and brother Ethan. His medal is on display at the family owned hotel across the street from the Cottage Cafe. Weibrecht is also a fan of fishing, golf, mountain and road biking.
